  • Vehicles have been identified as a major source of pollutants within the Perth airshed. The Department of Environment and Conservation is implementing the CleanRun vehicle emissions reduction program to improve air quality.
CleanRun will implement key actions within the Perth Air Quality Management Plan and implement the National Environment Protection (Diesel Vehicle Emissions) Measure.
Five CleanRun program components have been developed including a comprehensive communication/education campaign, training of in-service and apprenticeship mechanics, vehicle emissions testing, smoky vehicle reporting and environmental verification.
The objective of the vehicle emissions program is to enable collection of data that will be used to assess the need for an ongoing in-service vehicle emissions control initiatives. The results from the emissions testing will be used to develop programs and strategies to improve the performance of the vehicle fleet.
This paper contains the findings of the emission testing to date, examines the levels of each emission category, discusses the implications of these findings in relation to the emissions performance of Perth's vehicle fleet and provides an outline of the emission reduction measures being introduced by the CleanRun program.
Keywords: vehicle emissions reduction, communication/education campaign, in-service and apprentice mechanic training, petrol and diesel vehicle emissions testing, smoky vehicle reporting.
