Abstract for presentation at 14th IUAPPA World Congress

The Role of Transportation Related Emissions in Air Pollution, Public Health and Climate Change: Past Lessons for Future Actions

  • Dr Alan Lloyd, International Council on Clean Transportation, United States
  • Transportation related emissions represent a major challenge to improving air quality, reducing the health impact of air pollution and reducing greenhouse gases (GHG). Concern about the health impact of fine particles is constantly reinforced by new scientific data. While efforts to reduce emissions from light and heavy-duty vehicles are resulting in significantly reduced emissions from this sector, growth in emissions from marine and aviation presents added challenges.
Using examples from California's successful program, the presentation will highlight lessons learned about emission reduction approaches for vehicles and fuels, retrofits for on-road vehicles, the low emissions and zero emissions programs, and the health benefits from the consequent pollutant reductions.
Discussion of the regulatory approaches to reduce emissions of GHG from vehicles and fuels will be included. The critical need to reduce both GHG and conventional and toxic emissions from the transportation sector will be examined and recommendations will be made for future actions.
