An Air Quality Screening Tool for Roadway Analysis
The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) of New South Wales (NSW) has developed a Tool for Roadside Air Quality (TRAQ) to estimate the worst-case emission concentrations from vehicles from a roadway using the US EPA roadway dispersion model CALINE4.
A graphical user interface has been developed to input the required information which includes vehicle emission rates, numbers of traffic lanes, hourly traffic flow, heavy vehicle percentages and road type. Other inputs include local landuse and existing air quality. Concentrations of the pollutants are predicted at fixed distances ranging from kerbside to 200 metres from the roadway. Guidance is provided on how to relate the 1-hour average concentrations predicted by the model to the relevant averaging period for the pollutant concerned.
