Separation Distances as a Planning Tool
The potential air pollution impact of developments can be minimised by good design, good construction and good management, but at times this does not reduce the potential impacts to a satisfactory level. The IUAPPA World Congress Environment Protection Authority in South Australia has developed “Separation Distance Guidelines”.
The Guidelines are used as a first level of air pollution assessment. This Guideline offers developers, planning authorities and environmental regulators and fast and cheap method of determining appropriate separation from sensitive receptors. The use of the Guideline often negates the requirement for air pollution modelling. The Guidelines cover the range of industries that are required to be licensed by the Environment Protection Authority in South Australia and many developments that are not required to be licensed.
